A birthday is a good reason to stop and be photographed properly. This is a look at the birthday shoot we made with Mrs Helen Oluronke.
If you are searching for a birthday portrait photographer in Ibadan, you may be after something quieter than party snapshots: a few considered images of yourself, made for you and kept for years. That was the spirit of Mrs Helen Oluronke's birthday shoot, and it is the kind of session we love making at Tboss Photography.
A birthday portrait session built on colour and calm

We worked against a deep olive green backdrop, softly lit so that it glows a little unevenly, like an old painted canvas. Green can be a demanding colour, but it flatters warm skin beautifully and gives the whole set a settled, unhurried feeling. Nothing in the frame competes with the person standing in it.
The outfit does a great deal of the storytelling. A black, strapless bodice cut on a gentle diagonal is embroidered with a branch of small blossoms, beads and a few larger, softly sculpted flowers. Below it, a full champagne skirt falls in generous folds. Against the olive background, the black gives strength and the champagne gives light. In one frame a long black scarf drapes from the neck and falls down the back, which adds movement to a pose that is otherwise very still.

We began wide, with full-length frames that show the whole silhouette of the skirt, and then moved in closer. The close portraits are where the details come alive: a sleek, chin-length bob, polished make-up with a warm, glossy lip, a stack of slim gold bracelets, and small pearl-like earrings. A hand lifted to the cheek and a gaze turned up and away gave us the reflective, elegant mood we wanted. In the full-length frame with her hands behind her back, Mrs Oluronke is simply smiling, and it may be our favourite image of the set.
Planning a birthday photoshoot in Ibadan

A birthday portrait does not need to be complicated, but a little preparation makes the session feel easy. These are the things we would suggest to anyone planning a similar shoot:
Choose one outfit that you love and that has something to look at. Embroidery, texture and structure all photograph well, and a strong piece lets the portraits feel finished even when the setting is simple. If you can, bring a second look that contrasts with the first, so you have both a dramatic option and a softer one.
Think about colour before you arrive. Rich, deep backdrops such as olive green suit warm skin tones and bold or neutral clothing. Tell us what you are wearing and we can plan the backdrop and lighting around it.
Settle your hair and make-up first, and keep your jewellery simple and intentional. A single stack of bracelets or one pair of earrings can finish a look without pulling attention from your face.
Finally, come with a mood rather than a rigid list of poses. We guide every session gently, from the first frame to the last, so you never have to know what to do with your hands. Some of our best portraits come from the moments between poses, when you relax and the smile arrives by itself.
If you are looking for a portrait photographer in Ibadan to mark a birthday in this unhurried way, we would be glad to hear from you. Our thanks to Mrs Helen Oluronke for trusting us with her day.
